How to Hot Dog

It’s baseball season and if you don’t know me that well, the only thing that you really need to know is that I love baseball. From now until November, I’ll be glued to my phone, iPad, TV, or whatever I need to use to get my hands on a game. I’m also the proud manager of a fantasy baseball team that’s going to the moon. Anyway, my house becomes an open house for pretty much all of Summer, meaning I have to cook:

A) on my toes

B) in bulk

C) with a Summer/BBQ/grill vibe

This is not me complaining. I LOVE it. I would spend every single day doing it if I could. All of that being said, I have to cook toward the vibe. That means hot dogs, hamburgers, corn, the whole nine yards. Hot dogs can get boring (to some people, not me) so I’ve been trying to find ways to break up the monotony on arguably the easiest and most baseball-watching-friendly food. For opening day, I knocked together a bahn mi dog, a double bacon cheeseburger dog, a poutine dog, and a buffalo mac + cheese dog. Yes, they were all delicious. Being from Detroit (coney city, baby) I know how to hot dog. I’ll give some tips below along with the basic recipes for all of those fun dogs I mentioned. Happy season!!!!!

Hot Dog Hosting Tips

  • Make a hot dog charcuterie board, if you will. Cook up as many hot dogs as you need and put all of the potential toppings on a board and just set that all out along with your buns and have your guests do it themselves. Basic topping examples would be: ketchup, mustard, relish, chili, cheese, and onions.
  • Make them a Detroit-style Coney dog. Bun, dog, non-bean chili, yellow mustard, white onions, perfection.
  • Boil ’em! Grilled hot dogs are superior, but if you wanna call it done, boil them in mass for 4-6 minutes and call it a day.
  • If you do grill your hot dogs, and you have an upper ‘warming’ section on your grill, place your buns there to steam them while you’re cooking the dogs. So dreamy.
  • Place the dog in the bun and wrap it in aluminum foil and just set them out. That way, they keep the heat and if you’re outside, ain’t no bugs going to get on those dogs.
  • All beef, baby.
