Bourbon Vanilla Extract
One of the most important, utilized ingredients is vanilla extract. Whether you’re a baker, a home cook, a barista – vanilla is a universally loved flavor that all chefs use daily. I add vanilla extract into my baked goods, sauces, coffee, and more. When I didn’t know as much, I would just grab the imitation vanilla at the store to use not realizing I could make my very own, very easily at that, at home. Not only is it easy to make – the quality is that much better and you can customize it to give it it’s very own flavor that fits you and what you’re looking for!
The quality of your beans is important. To make my ideal vanilla extract, I use Vanilla Bean Kings beans and extract kit. They make it easy and inexpensive by giving you everything you need and tell you exactly how to do it. Not only is it fun to make for yourself – but get an early start and it can be such a fun birthday or holiday gift to give someone. Below – I’ll go through how, with Vanilla Bean Kings help and expertise, I made my own bourbon vanilla extract!
FDA calls for 13.35 ounces of vanilla beans per one gallon of liquid. That makes out to be 0.9 ounces of vanilla beans per 8 ounces of (at least 35% alcohol) alcohol.
Bourbon Vanilla Extract
Equipment
- 8.5 oz glass jar or bottle
Ingredients
- 1 oz. vanilla beans about 8-10 beans
- 8 oz. bourbon at least 35% alcohol
Instructions
- Cut your vanilla beans in half and then slit them open length-wise. I'll attach a video showing my process in this blog post!
- Completely submerge your vanilla beans with the bourbon.
- Secure the lid on your jar or bottle. Store in a location that is out of direct sunlight and at room temperature. Shake 1-2 times a week.
- Let your extract sit for 6-12 months to let the extraction fully finish. The longer you wait, the better. Extract ages like fine wine!
Notes
- If stored properly, it will last forever!
- Be patient, it will be worth it 😉
- If you’re not a fan of bourbon – try vodka, rum, or brandy
